If you’ve had your website for a few years now, you may be wondering whether it’s time for an update. Maybe you’ve been thinking about a complete redesign, or perhaps there are a few small things you know need tweaking but haven’t quite got around to yet.

The good news is that most websites don’t suddenly stop working overnight, so there’s a little time to work out what makes the best sense 😉

More often than not, websites slowly drift out of date as your business evolves. Before you know it, your website is still telling the story of the business you had two or three years ago, not the one you have today.

Here are eight signs your website might be ready for a little TLC. None of these mean anything is especially wrong, just that your business and website may have drifted apart a little over time.

1. Your business has changed

This is probably one of the biggest.

Over the years, you may have evolved the way you operate. Perhaps you’ve refined your services, or now work with different clients. Maybe there are things you no longer offer, or other services that have become a much bigger part of your business.

If your website hasn’t kept up to date with these changes, it could be attracting the wrong enquiries or even missing opportunities altogether.

Your website is there to reflect where you are now, not where you’ve been.

2. You’ve been thinking about a redesign

Sometimes, redesigning your website is the right answer.

But not always.

Many websites don’t really need rebuilding, they just need updating.

For example, I’ve been updating lots of my own content this year to reflect changes in SEO and the rise of AI search tools. Even without a website redesign, refreshing content can have a huge impact. It’s usually less overwhelming too!

3. You avoid looking at your website

Be honest - when was the last time you properly looked at your website as a visitor?

We’ve all been there, and I often speak with business owners who tell me they avoid logging in altogether.

Sometimes it’s because they don’t love how their site looks or feels anymore. But more often, it’s all just a bit overwhelming. They’d like to improve a few things, but they’re not quite sure where to start.

If that sounds familiar, it’s more common that you might think - and easily fixable. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh pair of eyes and a manageable list of priorities.

4. People struggle to understand what you do

This is a big one!

When you know your business inside out, it’s easy to assume that things are obvious to everyone else when they’re really not.

Someone landing on your website for the first time should be able to quickly understand:

  • Who you help

  • What you do

  • How you can help them

  • What they should do next

This kind of clear messaging is important for people and for search systems too. Search engines and AI tools are much better at understanding websites that explain what they do in a straightforward way.

If your website is vague, you’re making everyone work harder. Focusing on simple navigation and clear messaging is often more important than a flashy design.

5. The enquiries you’re getting aren’t quite right

Are people regularly asking for services you don’t offer, questioning your prices, or misunderstanding what you do?

These kind of enquiries can be a clue that your website messaging isn’t quite clear enough.

Making a few small changes to the wording on your website can often help attract more of the right people - and save everyone time.

6. Your testimonials, photos, and examples are out of date

Adding testimonials, case studies, and examples of work help people trust you. They also give search engines and AI tools more evidence that you’re actively doing the work you talk about.

If your newest testimonial is from several years ago, people may wonder whether you’re still actively working with clients. Search engines and AI systems also rely on new content and expertise signals when deciding which sources to show to people in search.

Adding recent examples of work, updated photographs, and new testimonials can make a massive difference without redesigning anything.

7. You haven’t added any new content recently

This isn’t about blogging every week.

But regular updates help visitors to your site trust your business. They also give search engines new information to work with and provide AI tools with more opportunities to understand your expertise.

You could add:

  • New testimonials

  • Updated service pages

  • Blog posts

  • Answers to questions clients ask

I always like to bring it back to the person.

What would someone find helpful when they land on my site? Do that, and you’re a long way towards being found more often online.

8. You can’t remember the last time you reviewed your site

Most of us update social media far more often than our websites!

But websites benefit from regular check-ins too. Links break, services and products change, and content goes out of date.

People notice, and search engines need to crawl your pages successfully. AI tools increasingly look for accurate, up to date information too.

Broken links, old service pages, and outdated content don’t necessarily mean you’ll disappear from search, but they can make it harder for both people and technology to trust what they’re seeing.

Your website may not need a complete redesign

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that we’re a lot harder on our own websites than we need to be.

A website isn’t something you finish and never touch again. It grows and evolves alongside your business.

When things start to feel a bit overwhelming, I often find it helps to go back to basics:

  • Take a little time

  • Step back

  • Review what you have

  • Make a few small tweaks

Just a few hours spent reviewing your website can uncover opportunities you hadn’t seen before, and help you feel more confident about the way your business shows up online.

Your website doesn’t need constant reinvention. It just needs to keep supporting the business you have today.
